California will become the first state in the U.S. with an extended producer responsibility program for textiles now that Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed SB 707 into law. The law will require producers of certain apparel and other textile products to establish a producer responsibility organization, which will create a plan for collecting, repairing, and recycling such material. Newsom signed a handful of other laws as well, including ones approving a carpet stewardship program.

LOOM3D: Wilson College of Textiles Ph.D. Student Founds Sustainable Startup

NCSU student Jeanine Fry began this project in the Wilson College’s Master of Textiles program with guidance from her advisors: Abdel-Fattah Seyam, head of the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management, and Janie Woodbridge, assistant professor. The two faculty members are co-inventors of LOOM3D’s technology.
European Commission Introduces Partial Ban on PFAS Use in Clothing

Several years after the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden took steps to ban PFAS substances from the EU, a partial ban has now been introduced by the European Commission. The ban will specifically apply to undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) and related substances. The substance is used in raincoats, among other garments, but can also be found in other consumer textiles. A transition period before enforcement starts varies per product (clothing, cosmetics, food packaging, etc.) and ranges from one and a half years to five years.
